Nela Park is the headquarters of GE Lighting, and is located in East Cleveland, Ohio. Today, GE Lighting is a part of GE's Consumer and Industrial business, headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky. Nela Park still serves as the operating headquarters of the lighting division. Development of the site was started in 1911, when the National Electric Lamp Company (NELA) was dissolved and absorbed into General Electric. It was the first industrial park in the world and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The campus emulates a university setting, and the dominant architectural style is Georgian Revival. The 92-acre (370,000 square mile) campus is home to GE's Lighting & Electrical Institute, which was founded in 1933. Each December, Nela Park features a world-famous Christmas lighting display, which culminates in a miniature version of the National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C., designed by GE Lighting. Nela Park was established in 1911 when General Electric bought an abandoned vineyard seven miles from Cleveland in what was then the rural countryside. The facility is named for the Cleveland company (National Electric Lamp Company) that was acquired by GE in 1900 in an effort to standardize the size of light bulb bases. Description: Four 8" by 10" (2.032 by 25.4 cm) photographs document the October 1944 explosion and fire that devastated a Cleveland neighborhood. In 1941 the East Ohio Gas Company built a plant in Cleveland for performing the process of liquefaction and regasification. Three tanks were built to hold 60-million cubic feet of gas each. A fourth tank was added in 1943 that held 120 million cubic feet. When gas escaped from the fourth tank it ignited into a ball of flame that swept a mile-wide area and claimed 129 lives. In the aftermath of the explosion and fire, the company paid $7,000,000 in compensation to injured workers or families of workers killed in the disaster. It also created a scholarship fund for children of employees who perished. The East Ohio Gas Company was incorporated in 1898 as a marketing company for the National Transit Company, the natural gas arm of John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company of New Jersey. Description: This photograph from the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus is of 26-year-old James Buchanan. His formal attire suggests that the photograph was taken during his trial or sentencing. Buchanan was the 276th individual to be executed via the electric chair in Ohio. The caption at the bottom reads: “No. 276 James Buchanan of Cuyahoga County, Legally Electrocuted October 26, 1949, for the Murder of Elda Coogle.” The victim's name is often spelled Ida Koogle in late 1940s newspaper articles. In 1885 the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio, became the location for all executions, which previously took place in the various county seats. In 1896 the Ohio General Assembly mandated that electrocution replace hanging as the form of capital punishment. The Ohio Penitentiary regularly offered tours as well as souvenir photographs and postcards of the building and prisoners on death row. Halle Brothers Co. of Cleveland, Ohio, commonly referred to as Halle's, is a defunct department store chain. During most of time of operations, Halle's focused on higher-end merchandise, which it combined with personal service. The company was the first major department store in Cleveland to open a suburban branch store. Founded on 7 February 1891 by brothers Samuel Horatio Halle and Salmon Potland Chase Halle, the very first store was at 221 Superior Avenue near the city's Public Square, where the brothers bought out a hat and furrier shop owned by T.S. Paddock. Two years later, they moved to Euclid Avenue and East 4th Street in 1893, adding ready-to-wear clothing to the mix. The firm was officially incorporated in 1902 as the Halle Bros. Co. After growing and moving several times, the company eventually built its main store at 1228 Euclid Avenue by 1910. By 1927, their new $5 million Huron-Prospect Building was opened, creating an emporium at the city's Playhouse Square Center theatre district. The former flagship store at Playhouse Square Center was redeveloped as offices by Forest City Enterprises with space for retail shops on the main floor and a food court in the former Downstairs Store. During the late 1990s, the building was also used as the main location of the fictional Winfred-Louder store in "The Drew Carey Show" on ABC. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This flag hung at the Campus Martius Museum in honor of five employees serving in the Second World War: William R. Willison, Samuel P. Tobias, Robert L. Cole, Lewis B. Anderson, and Norman G. Wolfe. The In Service Flag (Blue Star Banner) was patented by an Ohioan, Colonel Robert L. Queisser of East Cleveland, Ohio, on 6 November 1917. Intended for display by families who have members serving in the Armed Forces, blue star banners are displayed in shop windows to honor the members of that organization who were serving. Most flags were homemade by mothers, though they later became mass-produced. Upon death in service the blue star was replaced by a gold one.
